October 2010 saw the first-ever Flight Test Nation Lakebed Fly-In, allowing private aircraft to land on the cracked clay surface known as Rosamond Dry Lake Bed at historic Edwards Air Force Base, California. A total of 2,263 pilots applied to participate and 100 were chosen in a special lottery. Jim Simmons was one of the lucky ones. He and Rick Bernardi spent 10 days flying there and back and were recognized as having flown the farthest.

The route of the trip. The southerly path was the route to Edwards.

The mixture control kept creeping during the flight. An aviation certified rubber band fixed the problem
